The Whānau Whānui Community
The whānau is essential to what we do at Te Kura Māori o Porirua. Whānau - Children - Staff is what makes us successful in what we do. The staff support the aspirations of the whānau for their children and the whānau support the school to help their children realise their potential.
Te Wānanga o Raukawa
Beyond that the bigger whānau of Porirua is always there to lend a hand, run a course or programme. The kura in conjunction with Te Wānanga o Raukawa have started a programme which allows parents to take the Mātauranga Māori degree at TWoR. With the hope this will allow the parents to act as a resource for their children once they reach wharekura.
In 2014 a group of parents met to discuss ways of interacting with the kura. Most had come from kōhanga and were used to being more involved in what was happening with their child.
Like Minded Pakeke LMP
Some were interested in organising sports and others just wanted to have some say in their child's education. This group eventually organised itself into a support group for children, whānau and teachers of the kura. This group is named themselves LMP which is an acronym for Like Minded Pakeke. The group help organise sports, provide support, run fund raisers and provide a morning tea once a term to thank teachers and support staff of the kura. They can be contacted ... webpage, facebook???
