Waka Ama 2021

Waka ama is a major sport in the wharekura. In 2021 it looks like we will have six teams:
J19 Boys J19 Girls 2 x J16 Boys 2 x J16 Girls
KAIAKO: our kura is very fortunate to have excellent, experienced skilled coaches on our staff. Our team of kaimahi for 2021 will consist of Jacob Wilkins-Hodges, Andy Hanara, Keanu Andrews-Sio, Kataraina Taepa-Matakatea and Beau Matakatea. Having this team available enables us to ensure our programme is suited specifically to our tauira and our kura mātāpono.
EQUIPMENT: The kura provides hoe and life jackets. We are fortunate enough to have the support of local waka ama clubs who allow us to utilise their waka. Students are welcome to bring their own hoe if preferred.
The kura has applied for funding to purchase some one-man waka so hopefully this is successful.
COMPETITION: There are two major regattas that the teams compete in:
A practice schedule for all teams will be issued at the beginning of the year once we have confirmed the availability of waka.
COSTS: we are still finalising costs however the following provides a guideline
FUNDRAISING: the rōpū has one major fundraising activity which involves kaihoe collecting sponsorship and then completing a 10km hoe. These funds are put towards reducing the total cost of the student fees.
Another fundraiser is often held at the regional event with whānau selling kai during the day.
The kura also applies for grants and sponsorship to further support the programme.
Whānau can order Waka Ama singlets through the following link.
Tēnā koutou, kia maumahara - mā te kura ngā pukapuka me ngā taputapu ako matea e toha atu ki ngā ākonga katoa. Kāore he utu mō ēnei rauemi.
Just a reminder the kura will distribute all necessary books and learning equipment to all students. There is no cost for these resources.
