Kaumātua day, what a special day! Even the winter couldn't put these kaumātua off as they showed up in droves on Thursday to see what their mokopuna get up to at Kura. We were honoured that so many took time out to wrap up warmly and pay us a visit on our annual Kaumātua day. As luck would have it the day was fine and the sun was shining just like the faces of the mokopuna as they saw their kaumātua coming into the hall. Thanks to all the kaumātua that came to school last week to spend time with their mokopuna and to see what they get up to during the day. Please remember we have an open door policy here at kura, so don't be shy and just wait for Kaumātua day, come down anytime and see what your mokopuna are up to.

The recent Manu Kōrero competition in Ōtaki was an awesome event for all that participated and watched.  Our girl Te Paea Te Tana took out the Tā Turi Carroll (Junior English competition) and will be competing in the Nationals later on in the year.  She competed in both English and Māori, and we of course think she was unlucky not to win both.  We were well represented by our students and thank their family and friends for supporting them before and on the day, thats what it's all about whānau, WHĀNAU! Thanks again to Ngatuere Matakātea and Ngārangi Babbington who stood with mana for the school and their respective whānau, ka mau te wehi e tai mā!

The other week some of our college students were invited to a day facilitated by Otago University at Wellington Hospital.  The day course was designed to give the students insight into the Health Sector and an opportunity to try different aspects of Health.  A few of the courses the students were able to get to on the day were:

  • the Air Ambulance
  • the Anesthesia suite
  • the X-ray unit
  • and Physiotherapy

Although they did not get to things like the surgeons course because of time restraints they did meet a Māori student training to be a doctor.  We hope this may encourage some of our students to at least look at the Health sector as an option for them once they leave school.  There are many options, not just being a doctor or a nurse and all the facilitators were quick to encourage the students to look at the different options in Health. Anyone interested in the Health will need to look at all the sciences in Wharekura. Me rere te mihi ki Te Wānanga o Ōtākau, nōu te whakaaro, nāu te pōwhiri, he ara tenei e eke panuku, e eke tangaroa ai ā tātou tamariki, tēnei te iti o TKMP te mihi atu.

Strike Percussion Ensemble

8/06/17

The kura was visited by the Strike Percussion Ensemble on the 8th June 2017.  Touring nationally and internationally throughout the year, Strike has earned the tag as one of New Zealand’s hardest working musical groups.  The group ran two sessions at the same time for all the students of the kura. The ākonga were all given a drum or two and followed the instructions of the tutors to produce a beat.  The group played a concert at the end of the day which was enjoyed by all the ākonga.  Strike tēnā koutou i whakaaro nui mai ki tō mātou kura, hoki mai anō ā tōna wā.
